Day 5 5/24 at sea
Endicott Arm/Dawes Glacier 5AM - 10AM
Bring a pair of binoculars and search for bald eagles, harbor seals, humpback whales, and brown bears
Endicott Arm, a fjord, named in 1889 by a USN ltcmdr for William Crowninshield Endicott, the sec of war under pres Grover Cleveland. It is 50 miles south of Juneau and extends over 30 miles long, with nearly one-fifth of its area covered in ice.Hopefully we can see some seals lazing about. At the head of the fjord you'll find the tidewater glacier, Dawes Glacier, this glacier regularly expels enormous chunks of ice into the waters below in a magnificent process known as calving
Dawes Glacier was named in 1891 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey for Henry Laurens Dawes a lawyer and statesman from Massachusetts. It is a tidewater glacier with a face hundreds of feet tall. It provides breeding and whelping grounds for harbor seals. The blue of the drifting ice caused by mineral deposits making it gorgeous, magnificent and imposing. (It has been recorded to be retreating fairly rapidly)
